We know that affordability can limit access to cycling due to the cost of a bike, yet it can provide freedom to travel for free, with positive impacts on community cohesion, health and the environment. In Essex, a concept was devised to help remove the biggest barrier to cycling in areas of high deprivation, and change the demographics and image of cycling.

Essex Pedal Power is a community cycling initiative. It provides free bikes to residents living in the county’s most disadvantaged areas. Working together through a whole-systems approach with the Active Essex Local Delivery Pilot (LDP), Essex CC, The Active Wellbeing Society (TAWS) and other key partners, the inclusive programme aims to make cycling accessible for everyone providing access to employment, training and educational opportunities or key local services. The plan is to give away more than 4,000 bikes by 2025, focusing on the levelling up areas recognised by Essex CC.
