BREAKING NEWS: Government steps in at troubled Birmingham

By Heather Jameson | 22 July 2014

Trouble-hit Birmingham City Council will face a government review into its governance, as well as an education commissioner to sort out its schools, following the problems of Trojan Horse.

In one of her first task in the role of Education Secretary, Nicky Morgan has announced she would put an education commissioner into the authority, to report directly to herself and to Birmingham chief executive, Mark Rogers.

Speaking after a government commissioned report on the Trojan Horse affair was launched, Ms Morgan said she would not hesitate to take further action if need be.

Communities secretary Eric Pickles also announced the council would be subjected to a review of its corporate governance, by DCLG permanent secretary Sir Bob Kerslake.

The review – which stops short of a full intervention – will consider the ‘operation, culture and structures of the corporate governance arrangements’ at the council.

In a written ministerial statement, which was released by the DCLG as the education secretary announced measures on schools, Mr Pickles said: ‘I have agreed with the Leader of the City Council, Sir Albert Bore, that there should be a review of governance in the City Council.

‘Sir Albert and I have asked Sir Bob Kerslake to lead the review, with such support as he considers appropriate, and which will be undertaken with the full co-operation of the City Council. ‘
