Boom not gloom on the waterfront

Southampton is renowned as the cruise capital of Europe and is at the heart of Britain’s marine sector, with gross value added (GVA) of 18% according to the Office for National Statistics.

It was also rated as second in England for ‘good growth’, according to PwC and think-tank, Demos, in 2013. The evidence is clear that this is a city on the rise, and it is certainly building a brighter future. But how can such success have happened during the economic doom and gloom of recent years?

Two years ago, the council set out its vision through its City Centre Master Plan. This vision included £3bn of investment, 5,000 new homes by 2030, and 7,000 jobs by 2026.
