Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg has vowed to restore English local government’s status as a ‘powerhouse’ should the party help form the next Government.
In an exclusive opinion piece written for The MJ this week, the deputy prime minister sets out his vision for transferring further power to local level over the next parliament through ‘Devolution on Demand’.
‘We want local government in England to be a powerhouse once more, elected proportionately and with extra powers devolved to it,’ Mr Clegg stated.
