No sooner had the ink dried on my comment last week – which berated the main political parties for scant mentions of local government – than Nick Clegg popped up to prove me wrong with a manifesto bursting at the seams with devolution.
Even Nigel Farage bucked the trend with a chunk of the UKIP manifesto devoted to councils – even if it was just chief executive pay and council non-jobs.
Has anyone actually worked out what a non-job is yet, other than a PR ploy to get voters onside?
But back to the Lib Dems.
Not only did the party’s national manifesto mention councils, today will also see the launch of a local government specific manifesto, centred around plans to return the sector into a ‘powerhouse’.
