Plugging the watchdog gap

One of the first acts of the new secretary of state, Eric Pickles, when he came into post in 2010, was to scrap the Audit Commission’s inspection role.

One of the last acts, as we head into purdah for the General Election, is to give a final sign-off for the legislation which will axe the watchdog.
