The city of Chester has been an imposing and vital settlement since Roman times. But, two miles beyond the medieval walls and renowned historic shopping area of the Rows, lies the large satellite housing estate of Blacon.
Built on farmland on Chester’s outskirts to address a shortage of affordable housing in the 1950s and early 1960s, the suburb of Blacon was home at one time to one of the largest council housing estates in Europe.
Blacon is home to 16,000 residents and contains the most deprived wards within the Cheshire West & Chester Council area. The estate also fits into socio-economic measurements for being among the top 10% deprived areas nationally.
