Town halls ‘need their own OBR’

Local government needs its own version of the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) now the Audit Commission has been scrapped, former acting chair of the watchdog, Sir Michael Lyons, has claimed.

As communities secretary, Eric Pickles, signed off the commencement order of the Act that scraps the commission next week, Sir Michael claimed its demise has left a gap in the improvement agenda.
