Bob Neill gives his verdict on the Autumn Statement and explains what the chancellor needs to prioritise if he is to deliver on his plans
At the time of writing – just hours after the chancellor delivered his first (and, to bated breath, last) Autumn Statement – journalists, politicians and local government officials are thumbing through what is a noticeably thinner, arguably more grown-up Statement to that of previous years.
To an extent this was to be expected, given that it’s the chancellor’s first major appearance since the referendum. It is also, in itself, quite revealing.
