It is a mystery worthy of the great detective Sherlock Holmes himself. Millions of our fellow citizens have been hiding under the sofa since December. So eager were they to emerge and register to vote they crashed the Government computer on the final day available.

It is early days but the introduction of individual voter registration is up there on the list of Great British failures. It is an absolutely chaotic way of preparing an accurate voter register.
