Are our reserves good enough if the cuts kick-off?

Forget all the publicity over the John Lewis advert heralding the run-up to Christmas – November is way too early for that.

The real countdown to the festive season follows the utterly misnamed Autumn Statement.

Scheduled for 3 December, no-one was expecting a gift from the Government, but estimates of how far the cuts will bite seem to be rising. From original predictions of 25%-plus cuts for non-protected budgets, now the smart money – if we had any – will be on 30-33% cuts.
