Arrears set to skyrocket as UC rolls out

Rent arrears among council tenants claiming Universal Credit (UC) across the UK could reach several hundred million pounds, a new report has warned just days after the Government reaffirmed its commitment to the programme.

Giving evidence to the Work and Pensions Committee last week, work and pensions secretary David Gauke defended his department’s handling of the rollout amid reports of mounting rent arrears, difficulties in getting advance payments and increasing waiting times for advice.
