Auditors launch governance and accountability inquiry

Whitehall’s watchdog has launched an investigation into local government governance and accountability that will be delivered to MPs next year.

The National Audit Office (NAO), which reports to the Public Accounts Committee, said this week that while council governance and accountability frameworks ‘are key in securing value for money locally’ current arrangements ‘are being tested’ by the sector’s financial circumstances.
