The Government has been handed good news on the public finances with the last official figures before the General Election showing a drop in borrowing.
Office for National Statistics figures for the financial year 2016/17 showed that borrowing fell by £23.4bn compared to the year before, down to £48.7bn, the lowest since March 2008, the start of the recession.
