Consultation to be held on new intervention powers

The Government has committed to consulting the sector over new powers of intervention in council finances.

Shadow levelling up minister Alex Norris raised concerns about a clause in the Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill that would bestow ‘significant powers’ on the secretary of state to intervene in a local authority, including limiting borrowing and selling assets.
