Councils ‘close to collapse’ despite extra cash offer

Councils remain ‘perilously close’ to financial collapse despite an additional £166m to support social care and rural services, the Local Government Association’s (LGA) Conservative chairman has warned.

Responding to local government secretary Sajid Javid’s final finance settlement for 2018/19, announced this week, Lord Porter urged ministers to do more to support councils amid fears that more services will disappear over the next few years.
