Councils to share risk of business rates appeals

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government is looking to develop a ‘centralised risk-sharing system’ under which councils would share the burden of business rates appeals, local government minister Rishi Sunak has said.

In last year’s Spring Budget, councils were given access to £300m to ease business rate revaluation challenges, but Mr Sunak said the ministry was also looking at other ways to reduce the burden posed to individual councils.
