DWP must rebuild trust after housing benefit referrals drop

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is hoping to restore confidence in its efforts to tackle housing benefit fraud after performance plummeted.

Referrals from some councils are understood to have dropped by more than half, with some authorities not passing on any cases to the DWP in the aftermath of the rollout of a single fraud investigation service.

The time taken by DWP to process referrals also peaked at 16 days at one point.
