EXCLUSIVE: Failure to improve reporting and audit could prompt legislation

Whitehall officials have warned ministers ‘could seek to legislate’ if the transparency and quality of local authority financial reporting and external audit fails to improve.

In a letter seen by The MJ, Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government director, Kirby Swales, wrote: ‘Ministers are keen to see councils making greater efforts to ensure that the contents of local audit reports are more clearly signposted for local people.
