EXCLUSIVE: Stretched councils rumbled over identical financial returns

Councils have been reminded to regularly update their monthly financial returns to Whitehall after stretched teams were caught submitting the same numbers each time.

The accuracy of the data councils had been submitting on the impact of coronavirus on their finances was called into question after the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) spotted that a ‘small number’ of authorities were failing to change their numbers from month to month.
