Fresh LGA call after 'bed blocking' doubles

The Local Government Association (LGA) has called for ‘urgent action’ to support social care after new figures revealed hospital ‘bed blockers’ now outnumber COVID-19 patients.

According to NHS Providers, there are now more than 20,000 patients in hospital beds who are medically fit to leave but cannot be discharged because the right care is not available.

This compares to around 16,000 hospital patients with COVID-19.
