This week has seen the departure of two high profile chiefs, with Doncaster MBC’s Jo Miller announcing her new job in New Zealand while Donna Hall retired from Wigan MBC. Both will be a loss to local government.

As council capacity stalls, where is the next generation of council chiefs? There is a danger that too many have been stripped out in staff cuts or left when they saw the tough times ahead for the sector.
