LGA's pre-Budget play in war against austerity

Smith Square has begun drawing local government’s battle lines as chancellor Phillip Hammond comes under renewed pressure to loosen his grip on council finances.

Senior Local Government Association (LGA) officials are putting the finishing touches to their Budget submission ahead of this week’s deadline. Sources said the document would detail local government’s demand for an end to austerity which has pushed some authorities – including several large counties – close to financial collapse.
