Lawyers to probe ejection of councillors

By Dan Peters | 10 August 2022

Harborough DC’s interim chief executive has asked lawyers to review whether the council followed its own constitution correctly when ejecting councillors from the public gallery.

Liz Elliott told the latest full council meeting she would look into the decision by the council’s audit and standards committee earlier this year.

Cllr Phil Knowles, who leads the Lib Dems on the council, said he was ‘appalled’ councillors had been ordered to leave.

Fellow Lib Dem Mark Graves, a former auditor, said: ‘That’s the most egregious breach of the constitutional rules of this council I have ever seen.

'I’m deeply offended at being thrown out of the meeting against the constitution.’
