Lib Dem leader Sir Vince Cable has called for a land value tax to replace the current business rates system.
The party, which suggests the tax could be paid by the landowners rather than tenants, said it would boost productivity and investment, and help high street shops, but conceded it would not help them to compete with their online counterparts.
