MPs call for Universal Credit delay

Opposition MPs have urged ministers to postpone the Universal Credit rollout to avoid the risk of people being hit by potential payment delays at Christmas.

Some 30 Labour MPs and Green MP Caroline Lucas, who all represent constituencies where the new benefit is to be rolled out in the autumn, said that past experience of the new benefit system suggested many people could face ‘extreme hardship’.
