Northamptonshire CC's deficit could continue to rise and commissioners may be forced to take control of the council, councillors will be warned next week.

The cash-strapped authority met last night at an extraordinary council meeting after its second Section 114 notice was served last week.

Councillors at a further full council meeting next week will be told the deficit could 'realistically increase to circa £180m by March 2021 if appropriate action is not taken'.

A proposed action plan, which will be discussed at next week's meeting, features extended controls on spending - including approval for all spend more than £1,000 - and 'radical service reductions and efficiencies' in areas including children's and adult services.
