Announcements of new cash for stations are usually quickly hailed as brilliant news by local politicians.

And the West of England Combined Authority raced out of the sidings when No 10 announced it would be ‘upgrading Bristol East Junction station to tackle a major pinch-point in the south-west rail network’.
