Pickles takes final axe to spending watchdog

Communities secretary Eric Pickles has put the final nail in the coffin of the Audit Commission, signing off the commencement order of the act that scraps the watchdog yesterday. 

The Local Audit and Accountability Act 2014 marks the end of the body, which the secretary of state vowed to axe as one of his first acts as new minister in August 2010.
