Last week, something extraordinary happened. Local government finances topped the political agenda, debated by the prime minister and leader of the opposition in Parliament. Not adult care. Not the NHS. Local government finance.

This week, Martin Reeves and Rob Whiteman – two of local government’s most highly respected officials – claimed councils must stop colluding to hide the true extent of their financial problems for fear of being blamed for fiscal failures.
