Surrey CC scraps plans for 15% council tax referendum

By Mark Conrad and Sam Clayden | 06 February 2017

Surrey CC has scrapped plans to hold a referendum on whether to increase council tax by 15%.

Leader David Hodge, who is also leader of the Local Government Association Conservative group, said he was ‘willing to take a risk’ that a solution for social care ‘would soon be found,’ but refused to give further details.

Previously Cllr Hodge has said he had ‘no alternative’ to holding the referendum, saying it would be ‘irresponsible’ not to act and suggesting not raising council tax would ‘decimate the fabric’ of his community.
