If there’s one valuable life lesson health secretary Matt Hancock appears to have failed to learn at school it’s the art of excuse-making.

Who hasn’t reeled out the old schoolboy – or indeed schoolgirl – classic excuse ‘the dog ate it’.

And for those in the post-analogue era, there is the ubiquitous digital coverall ‘but I emailed it to you…’
