The beating heart of politics now rests in the suburbs and shires

Something is stirring in the shires and with significant implications for British politics beyond the next General Election.

Locally, the election results mean the Conservatives have established a hegemony on county politics which looks likely to last for decades. Also, thanks to the rather byzantine voting structures of the Local Government Association, it means it has a lock on the political control of that organisation for the foreseeable future.
