Clocking in for communities

David Ramsay looks at the ambitions behind 15-minute neighbourhoods and how to overcome the challenges of creating them, including trying to sort out stakeholder objections early on.

Imagine a world in which cars are redundant and everyone can access the services they need within just 15 minutes of their doorsteps. This is the ambition behind the ‘15-minute neighbourhood', an innovative planning concept that's gaining momentum with communities and local authorities hoping to breathe new life into high streets hit by Covid and the rise of online shopping.

Bringing together health services, supermarkets, schools, community hubs, leisure facilities, shops, and private businesses, the 15-minute neighbourhood aims to redesign our areas so that all our public, leisure, and retail needs are easily accessible by foot, bike, or public transport within just 15 minutes of our homes.
