‘Back door’ shake-up fears

The local government map could be ripped up after a last-minute amendment to the devolution Bill paved the way for reorganisation ‘by the back door’.

A government amendment to the Cities and Local Government Devolution Bill passed this week gives councils until the end of March 2019 to join whichever combined authority they want – even against the wishes of their neighbours.
