Exclusive: Stark warning issued over ‘broken’ finances

Local government is facing the ‘last throw of the dice’ for reforming its finance system, according to the chair of the Commission on Local Government Finance, Darra Singh.

After a raft of attempts to shift the balance of funding between central and local government funding – including Sir Michael Lyons’ review in 2007 – Mr Singh claimed the system was now ‘broken’ as councils are stretched to the limits under the current fiscal challenges.
