As the dust settles on the 2014 Budget, there were few shocks for local government, though as Lord Lamont reminded us last week the chancellor still had ‘half the job to do’ in cutting public spending.

If we can expect austerity to remain a fact of life for the sector as a whole counties in particular must astutely assess what this is going to mean for the funding of essential services.
