In 2014, the coalition Government introduced virtual schools across England’s local authorities to address the wide attainment gap and poorer long-term outcomes experienced by looked-after children.
This had a transformative impact on the educational achievement and inclusion of this vulnerable group. The virtual school remit has consequently been extended in 2018 to children previously looked-after and again in 2021 to all children with a social worker.
