Are council leaders the new football managers?

Since 2014, over half of London councils have changed their political leaders. Even more dramatically, nine of the 10 councils in Greater Manchester have seen a fresh political face in the same period. Clearly, change is always a part of political life.

What is surprising in the recent trends is that few of these changes is attributable to the actions of the electorate. More common are ‘palace coups’ where their council colleagues or members wants to see change.
