Death threats, stalking and spitting are leading to councillors quitting an ‘increasingly toxic’ political environment.
A survey by the Local Government Association (LGA) of more than 5,000 councillors – released to mark the launch of a campaign on the issue at this week’s annual conference - found a ‘startling’ seven out of 10 councillors have been abused or intimidated in the last year.
