Green dreams axed

For around 200,000 proud townsfolk across this sceptred isle, the Britain in Bloom competition is an exercise in green-fingered local pride.

So imagine the consternation and bewilderment among 20 floral enthusiasts in Melksham, Wiltshire, when the council chose to cut down unsightly trees the very night before inspectors from the Royal Horticultural Society came to judge.
