Local Government Finance Bill: A big let-down for the sector

Local government was not predicting much in the way of legislation from last week’s Queen’s Speech, following Theresa May’s shock loss of a majority at the General Election. Against that backdrop it certainly lived up to expectations.

With the parliamentary agenda lacking much in terms of legislation for the next two years, aside from a series of Bills aimed at delivering a ‘smooth and orderly’ Brexit, the more interesting news for local government was what was absent from Her Majesty’s address.

Few in the sector will be surprised that local government reforms did not top the agenda in an age of Brexit and heightened terror threats.
