These days secretaries of state at Marsham Street barely have time to gather their thoughts before they are catapulted to another part of Whitehall.

Diary then – in words it never thought it would write – feels a whiff of nostalgia for the five-year reign of Eric Pickles, which offered stability to the sector, if nothing else.
