Positive powers amid adversity

Local government chiefs say budget cuts, managing citizen expectations and the reducing workforce are the top three challenges they face. But as Dan Peters reports, the survey by The MJ and the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives (SOLACE) also reveals most believe they are having a positive impact on their area

The well-documented financial challenges at Northamptonshire CC has meant local government has rarely been more in the news.

Councils’ precarious financial sustainability even made headlines in The New York Times, which recently described Northamptonshire as a ‘warning sign of the perilous state of Britain’s local governments’.
