Swimming against the tide

Sandwell BC has worked with its partners to overcome the odds and deliver a world-class sports facility on time and in budget for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Tony McGovern and Chris Jones explain

Local government has faced extraordinary challenges in the past five years. Austerity, Brexit, COVID, international conflict, migration and many more besides. Most recently, the secretary of state has decided to place Sandwell MBC into Government intervention for a period of two years.

As well as grappling with all these issues, the council has also had to deliver a new world-class aquatics facility in time for the Commonwealth Games this summer. This was achieved on 19 April – exactly 100 days before the Games start.

The Aquatics Centre has been designed primarily as a local leisure facility which is adapted for the Commonwealth Games rather than the other way around.
