Telling the truthful story of local government finance

There is an urban myth that we only use 10% of our brains. Admittedly, it dates back to 1907 but research suggests as many as 65% of Americans believe it. Conversely, 35% may see it as fake news.

This got me thinking about other things we don’t use fully. For example, the capacity and capability of technology grows exponentially making it difficult to keep up. Our ability to communicate in different ways with residents is something we are aware of. But in today’s financial climate we don’t seek to enrich our conversations with customers but instead encourage them to access our services more cheaply through self-serve digital channels. When it comes to explaining the financial situation of our councils we need a more considered conversation.
