A ray of sunshine for Wigan

By Donna Hall | 14 May 2014

Sunshine House in Scholes is an aptly named community centre located in one of Wigan’s less affluent areas – a neighbourhood where residents still face dark times due to the economic downturn.

The place buzzes with constant activity, community ambition and civic activism. It is home to everything from drop-in sessions for people with mental health issues through to Pilates classes and art workshops.

Sunshine House recently hosted a writers’ festival with the likes of Anthony Horowitz and John Hegley working with local young people. A luncheon club for the elderly is held three times a week. Booking is recommended.
