Brokenshire replaces Javid as communities secretary

By Michael Burton | 30 April 2018

Former Northern Ireland secretary James Brokenshire has been named as communities secretary following Sajid Javid’s appointment as Home Secretary following the resignation of Amber Rudd last night.

Mr Brokenshire was previously immigration minister and MP for Old Bexley and Sidcup in Kent. He was appointed Northern Ireland secretary in 2016 but stood down on the grounds of ill health in January 2018 after being diagnosed with early stage lung cancer and had part of a lung removed.

He is the son of Peter Brokenshire, a former local government chief executive and a director of the Audit Commission.
