Call for councils to fill Northern Ireland 'democratic deficit'

The Government has rebuffed a call by councils in Northern Ireland for more devolved powers.

Labour MP Ged Killen raised the request from the Northern Ireland Local Government Association (NILGA) in the House of Commons yesterday, suggesting it would address the ‘democratic deficit’ left by the Northern Ireland Assembly, which has not sat for more than two years.
