EXCLUSIVE: Spooks in cyber threat warning

Chief executives have been warned of an increased cyber threat to councils as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a letter, local government minister Simon Clarke revealed that an assessment prepared by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) – part of intelligence agency GCHQ - had highlighted that council systems and networks are an ‘attractive option for cyber criminals and hostile states’.
